Summer Reading Club 2024: "Worlds of Imagination"

The Summer Reading Club is back for another summer at the Cochrane Public Library! This year, our theme is Worlds of Imagination! We will be exploring our creativity and imagination through reading, crafts, experiments, games, puzzles, and other activities.

We have six weekly registered sessions lined up during July 8 to August 15, just for kids aged 6-12. And guess what? They're all FREE! But wait, there's more! Every Friday from 1-4pm, we're hosting a Drop-In session called Friday Fun, so you can swing by whenever you like!

Here's the scoop: kids can keep track of their reading during the registered sessions for a chance to win cool prizes as a group. Plus, there's a Take-Home Summer Reading Challenge with even more prizes up for grabs! And mark your calendars for our kick-off week from July 2-5. We've got exciting daily events lined up—you won't want to miss out!

This program is made possible by the generous support of Cochrane Kiwanis!

Unfortunately, the registered program is for those aged 6-12. Your child is invited to take part in our take-home challenge and come to our drop-in "Friday Fun" from 1-4pm on Fridays!

If your reader turns 6 at some point during the summer and has completed kindergarten we would love to have your reader join us!

Children will need to be signed in and out of the program at each session. This process helps us maintain accurate attendance records and ensures that each child is safely released to the appropriate guardian.  Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter.

This said, due to the Library's Unattended Child Policy, while Summer Reading Club's Registered sessions are unparented, a caregiver of our readers aged 6-8 will have to stay in the Library during our program.

This program is designed around encouraging kids to read and create. We will be going through many different activities, crafts, experiments, and games to circle in on this idea.

"Worlds of Imagination" is a play on words for "worlds." Our aim is to get your readers to design and discover new worlds, whether that is another real "world" like outer space, a fictional world such as a fantasy world, or learning more about our world: earth.

You can! If you cannot make a couple sessions here and there, that is more than okay! However, if your reader is going to miss more than half the sessions, it may be better to take part in our Take-Home Reading Challenge.

While there is no specific reading goal for each day, each registered session will be competing against the other registered sessions of their age group to see which group reads the most and reaches the end of the board game first.

You will track the reading progress through a reading log that your reader will receive on the first day of SRC. All instructions on how to track their progress will be inside the front page of this reading log.

The Take-home challenge is an exciting opportunity open to all readers at the library aged up to 12. Here's how it works: You can snag a reading log from the Library Front Desk, then team up with your caregivers to set your very own reading goal.

And guess what? It doesn't end there! On Fridays from 1-4pm, we've got something special lined up just for you – our Drop-in "Friday Fun" sessions! If you manage to hit your reading goal for 5 out of 7 days in a week, you can turn your own artwork into a cool badge right there. Plus, every badge you make puts you in the running for our awesome grand prize!

Oh, and there's more – each day you reach your goal also earns you a shot at some fantastic sponsored prizes. So, what are you waiting for? Dive into the Take-home challenge and let the reading adventure begin!

Quick note: These are two separate programs, but why not join in on both? Double the fun awaits!

While we understand your enthusiasm to participate in multiple sessions, please note that each session within its respective age group will adhere to the same engaging lesson plan. Participating in multiple sessions will result in your child experiencing the same activities again.

July 2: Escape Room @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Put on your thinking caps and join us at the Library for an escape room. Using riddles, puzzles, and more, help us escape the room!

July 3: Flying Books @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Help the Cochrane Public Library set the record for the most ‘flying books’ in the Library at one time. Get ready to craft paper airplanes and give them a literary makeover by recreating your favourite book cover! Note: This activity will be videotaped.

July 4: Magic Show with Christopher Cool @ 3:00 pm - 3:45 pm

Join us for a magic show by Christopher Cool, Calgary’s funniest and most kid-friendly magician, who specializes in entertaining family and children audiences through his unique brand of interactive, high-energy, and funny magic shows!

July 5: Craft Extravaganza @ 2:00 pm -4:00 pm

Join us for a time of crafting with a smorgasbord of crafts to choose from. These crafts will encourage creativity and be a chance to exercise your creative muscles!

NOTE: ALL THESE ACTIVITIES ARE DROP-IN, NO REGISTRATION REQURIRED

You can print off your take-home reading log here. Make sure to print it double-sided along the "long edge."

Then, print off the below document single-sided. Cut this document in half in the middle and have the badge papers sit loose in the reading log.

Put them together and you have your reading log!

These take-home reading logs can also be found at the Front Desk of the Library starting June 28.
