Cochrane Public Library Unveils Fall Indigenous Programs and New Family-Focused Collection

Sep. 12, 2024

The Cochrane Public Library (CPL) is honoured to present a number of initiatives aimed at increasing awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture this Fall, including programs and expanded collections.

Free programs include workshops facilitated by Cree/ Metis Artist, Storyteller and Educator, Chantal Chagnon on Storystones and Medicine Wheel Teachings. CPL will also host Gloria Snow, an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper from Mînî Thnî, who will read “The Orange Shirt Day Story” and lead several engaging activities for all ages on September 28 at 2:00 p.m.

In addition, the Library is thrilled to add roughly 100 new children’s titles written by First Nations, Metis, and Inuit voices to its collection, many of which will be featured on display for the month of September.

“The Library is committed to inclusivity, and we offer impactful and educational programs and collections throughout the year to increase awareness of Indigenous culture,” said Carmen Erison, Program and Engagement Manager at Cochrane Public Library. “We always recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, but it is also important that we provide year-round opportunities to celebrate Indigenous culture and help foster continuous education and dialogue.”

These programs and collections were made possible through the support of Qualico Communities.

“We are so proud to be able to sponsor these amazing educational opportunities as a community builder in Cochrane,” said Emily Smith, Director of Marketing and Customer Care at Qualico Communities. “We are committed to learning and supporting Indigenous ways of knowing and doing.”
