Spirits in the Stacks: Library Launches New Spooky Lending Library
The Cochrane Public Library once again is proud to announce it has a new item in its growing collection of their Library of Things: a loanable Ghost Hunting Kit. Patrons will now be able to check out this kit and try their hand at ghost hunting, all for free with their library cards!
“Originally we thought of this Kit to coincide with the premiere of the latest Ghostbusters film,” says Community Outreach and Program Librarian Andrea Johnston. “However, due to COVID, the movie’s release has been postponed so we decided to launch the Kit just in time for Halloween!”
Long-time paranormal enthusiast Andrea Johnston says she’s very excited to offer this equipment to the public: “There are so many fans of shows like Ghost Hunters who want to be able to conduct their own investigations but don’t know where to start or want to spend money on these more specialized items. That’s where our Library comes in. We put together some key pieces of equipment that are easy to use along with a simple information packet to help amateur ghost hunters get started!” And while Johnston wants everyone to have fun searching out the spirits of Cochrane, she also cautions users to respect private property and obey all laws.
Included in the Kit are three of the main pieces of equipment that ghost hunters typically use: an audio recorder, video recorder with night vision, and an EMF detector. Each one is simple to use and can assist users in determining what is and isn’t paranormal. For a look at how to use the equipment, be sure to check out the library’s promotional video for the kit on their YouTube page!
The Library is also running a writing contest to help celebrate the launching of this new Kit. Open to all ages, the Library is looking for spooky stories to help celebrate the season! Submit either a fictional story, an informational report, or a poem to enter to win big. All entries must be handed in on or before 6 p.m. on October 23 with winners being announced October 30. Up for grabs are 4 author-signed copies of Canadian ghost story books including Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan 3 by Jo-anne Christensen, Journeys into the Unknown by Richard Palmisano, Haunted Canada 10 by Joel A. Sutherland, and Haunted Canada: The Second Terrifying Collection by Joel A. Sutherland. Full details can be found online and the Library encourages everyone to get writing and submit their stories!
