E-Mail    - an electronic message sent over the Internet from one computer to another
                - it can be sent anywhere in the world to a person who has an e-mail address
                - to send e-mail you must have a connection to Internet as well as access to a mail server
                - to receive e-mail you need an account on a mail server (like an address to get letters)

Mail Server - a computer which looks at an e-mail address and then forwards it to the recipient where it is stored in an electronic mailbox until it is retrieved.

ISP - the company that provides you with a connection to the Internet; when selecting your ISP, consider set-up costs, purchase price of modem, monthly charges and services provided.

Address - e-mail address (like street address) has two parts: a user name and a domain name.

User Name - part of the e-mail address that identifies the recipient’s mailbox.

Domain Name - part of the e-mail address that refers to the computer of a company or organization where the recipient has an electronic mailbox.

Top Level Domain -  the end of an address with a dot followed by 3 or more letters such as:

.com  for a commercial agency
.org  for an educational institute
.gov  for a government agency
.edu  for an educational institute

Header - the first part of an e-mail that contains the name and address of the recipient(s), the date it was sent and the subject of the message.

Body - the part of an e-mail that contains a message which is not as private as a letter so don’t include personal information unless it can be scrambled or encrypted.

Mailing List - a collection of e-mail addresses for people on Internet who share a common interest and can send e-mail to the entire list and receive messages from others on the list.

Spam - (or spamming) refers to the sending of unsolicited electronic mail to a large number of people by inappropriately using a mailing list.

Netiquette - basic rules of etiquette or good practices when communicating over the Internet.

Attachments - files which accompany your e-mail messages and may include documents, photos, sound and video files but the person receiving attachment must have software to read it
